CS SmartClient
The ChromaShare SmartClient is our desktop platform in which our product modules, such as CS PaletteShare, operate. The SmartClient uses modern technologies to give you all the benefits of a powerful desktop application with the connectivity of a web application.
Traditional desktop applications can create 'information silos', where important business data is held on just one computer, inaccessible to other users. This leads to all kinds of problems such as difficulty scaling across multiple locations, duplication of work on different systems, lack of visibility of data for everyone that needs it and no way to determine the 'big picture' across an organisation. Workarounds such as emailing data from one user to another can create additional problems and are only a partial solution.
Web applications solve many of the issues associated with desktop applications. The data is stored centrally on a server which is accessible to everyone, data security and backup procedures are easier to manage and with the data all in one place it's easy to avoid duplication and see the whole picture.
However, browser based applications are less productive than desktop applications and suffer a number of other disadvantages. Web applications can feel unresponsive, particularly on slow internet connections, and the user interface is limited, with useful features, such as drag and drop, often missing. Furthermore, web applications can be unreliable when handling very large files and, of course, require an 'always on' internet connection.

CS SmartClient is a desktop application, so all the advanced productivity features you need are available, but, because all data is automatically stored on a web server, you also get all the benefits of a web application. The SmartClient connects to the ChromaShare web services so users can easily share data and collaborate in real-time without compromising on features or usability. Other benefits of the SmartClient approach include:

- Security. The SmartClient connects to the ChromaShare web services over an SSL (https) connection for improved security.
- Advanced caching and background loading and saving means the SmartClient feels responsive even when handling very large files, such as high definition images.
- Offline working enables the SmarClinet to be used even when no internet connection is available. Changes are automatically synchronised with the server next time you are online.
